The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority has made GPS devices mandatory for public transport from 1 August 2026.
The authority says the devices must not only be installed but also kept operational.
The Road Transport and Highways Division issued the notification on 11 June, BRTA said.
GPS compliance will be checked when public vehicles seek registration or renewal of fitness certificates.
BRTA Chairman Habibur রহমান said vehicles presented for new registration or fitness certification must have a GPS device attached.
He said BRTA would verify the requirement through its system.
Owners or their representatives are asked to submit GPS-related proof or documents and display a mobile application during registration and fitness procedures.
BRTA said technical specifications for the devices are available from its local offices and website.
The authority cited Section 25 of the Road Transport Act 2018 and Rule 55 of the Road Transport Rules 2022 in setting out the verification process.
The Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association said it had reached agreements with several firms on GPS installation, but that all vehicles could not be brought online from 1 August.
Association organising secretary Jahangir Alam Khan said more time would be needed to complete the process.
Road Safety Foundation Executive Director Saidur Rahman said technology would need to be accompanied by structural reform, effective oversight and accountability in the transport sector.
