Bangladesh's Power Division said on Monday that some individuals or groups are spreading misleading propaganda about inflated electricity bills.
In a notice issued on 3 August, the division said complaints it had received about excessive bills have already been resolved together with the relevant distribution companies.
The notice said there is no scope for such propaganda or confusion over the matter.
Customers who have evidence of being overcharged can apply to the relevant authorities, and the complaints will be investigated with necessary action taken, the division said.
The Power Division urged all concerned to act responsibly on the issue.
It added that false information about electricity bills spread without evidence solely to create confusion would lead to strict legal action against those responsible.
The statement came after complaints about higher power bills had been received by authorities.
