Some consumers have alleged that electricity bills for June and July rose unusually sharply, with some saying charges were two to three times higher than before despite lower usage.
The Power Division said it had received complaints about excessive bills and that distribution companies were handling them.
It asked customers who believe they have been overbilled to apply to the relevant electricity distribution authority with supporting documents or evidence.
The division said such complaints would be examined and appropriate action taken.
On 3 August, the division issued a correction about 45 minutes after its original notice.
The initial notice warned of strict legal action against people or groups spreading false information about excessive bills without evidence, but the correction was described as replacing that provision with a request for responsible conduct.
A separate account of the notice continued to include the legal-action warning, leaving the final status of that language unclear.
The ministry said it was treating the matter as important for protecting customers’ interests.
