Reports that former Bangladesh police chief Benazir Ahmed has been released from a Dubai prison have not been formally confirmed by police or the anti-corruption commission.
Police headquarters spokesperson Shahadat Hossain said police have no information about his release and that Dubai police have not formally informed them.
Two police headquarters sources said they do not rule out the possibility of his release, while two sources close to Benazir said he left the Dubai prison on Thursday and that they had spoken with him.
Anti-Corruption Commission Director General Mirza Shafiqul Abedin Shibly said the commission learned of the release through the media, has no formal information or documents, and will take necessary legal steps.
Shibly denied any negligence by the commission, saying extradition requests are routed through the home ministry as the central authority.
Benazir was arrested by Dubai police in June with Interpol cooperation in a corruption case, and the UAE required a formal extradition request within 30 days, with the ACC sending an extradition request to the home ministry on June 16.
Benazir served as inspector general of police from April 2020 to September 2022 and was among seven RAB officers sanctioned by the United States in December 2021 over human rights violations.
In December 2024, the ACC filed four cases against Benazir, his wife, and two daughters over alleged illegal wealth of 74 crore taka, and a court ordered an Interpol arrest warrant in February 2025.
