A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate ordered Monowar Hossain Jibon, known as Ledu Hasan, sent to jail in a case over the killing of Abul Bashar Badshah, general secretary of the Nabodoy Housing unit of BNP in Mohammadpur.
The order was issued on 2 August after police produced Hasan before the court.
Investigating officer Hafizur Rahman of Adabor police station sought seven days of police remand for Hasan.
The court rejected the remand application and ordered him to jail.
Court general registration officer Mizanur Rahman said the case complainant submitted an affidavit stating that Hasan was not the actual accused.
The evidence does not specify the court’s detailed reasoning for rejecting remand.
Police said Hasan was detained by RAB-2 in the Mohammadia Housing Society area on 28 July.
The case alleges that a dispute began after whistle-blowing following Brazil’s World Cup victory on 29 June and was later discussed at a mediation meeting on 1 July.
It further alleges that Badshah and a man named Saddam were attacked at a crossroads that night with sharp weapons.
Badshah was taken first to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital and later to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where a doctor declared him dead, the case account says.
The account says Saddam was receiving treatment at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.
Police said Hasan faces 32 cases in Dhaka involving allegations including murder, weapons and narcotics offences.
Police also said statements recorded from other arrested people under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure implicated Hasan in supplying a weapon to a person identified as Parvez.
