Parliament’s Constitution Amendment Committee is scheduled to hold its first meeting at noon on Tuesday, 4 August, in the Cabinet Room of the Parliament Building.
Committee chair Salahuddin Ahmed is due to preside over the meeting.
The Parliamentary Secretariat said the committee will initially operate with 12 members because opposition parties have not nominated representatives.
The committee was formed in Parliament on 13 July with five of its proposed 17 seats left vacant for opposition members.
Chief Whip Mohammad Nurul Islam said the government had sought names from opposition leaders and delayed formation of the committee while awaiting them.
He said the committee could be reconstituted to add five opposition members if nominations are submitted.
The 12-member panel includes the chief whip, representatives from several parliamentary parties and alliances, and an independent member.
Opposition parties have opposed the amendment committee, arguing that Parliament should instead establish a committee for constitutional reform.
Jamaat-e-Islami lawmakers and other members of the opposition alliance walked out of Parliament in opposition to the committee’s formation.
Opposition leader Shafiqur Rahman has said his side would pursue public mobilisation if it did not receive a parliamentary route for constitutional reform.
Shafiqur Rahman also claimed that political organisations had agreed to a reform charter and that a referendum outcome on reform should be implemented.
The committee’s planned work and whether opposition parties will later take up the vacant seats remain unresolved.
