Mohammad Billal Hossain Bepari, member secretary of Shreepur municipal BNP in Gazipur, said he would die by suicide outside Shreepur police station unless police identified alleged online smear campaigners within 12 hours.

He made the statement at an anti-drug and anti-terrorism discussion organised by Shreepur police on the afternoon of 2 August, attended by Gazipur Police Superintendent Sharif Uddin.

Bepari alleged that several fake Facebook accounts had circulated an edited image that combined his photograph with pictures of alcohol bottles and two other people.

He said the image had harmed his personal and political reputation.

Bepari said he filed a general diary with Shreepur police station after learning of the posts.

He alleged that police had not shown visible progress in identifying those responsible.

He questioned how ordinary people could expect police services if a complaint by a municipal BNP leader did not receive an effective remedy.

Sharif Uddin said he had assured Bepari that law-enforcement personnel would stand by him as they would any other citizen and that he would receive justice.

The meeting was chaired by Shreepur police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Shahinur Alam and included political representatives, teachers, journalists and other local attendees.
