Nasir Uddin Patwary alleged in a verified Facebook post that his vehicle was attacked after he left a programme in Jaintapur for Sylhet city on Friday night.
He said a vehicle window was broken and that he sustained a bleeding cut to his hand.
He also said another person travelling with him sustained a bleeding hand injury.
Political tensions have intensified in Sylhet and Habiganj following allegations of attacks on National Citizen Party (NCP) leaders, the filing of counter-cases and growing disputes between rival political groups.
NCP Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary alleged that his vehicle came under attack in Sylhet. Separately, the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal filed an attempted-murder case in Habiganj naming NCP leaders Nasiruddin Patwary and Sarjis Alam, along with around 50 others.
The NCP claims that its leaders’ motorcades were targeted with brickbats and that vehicles were vandalised during recent political programmes. Party leaders have blamed political opponents and alleged that the attacks were intended to obstruct their activities.
Police, however, have described the reported attack on Patwary’s vehicle as “baseless.” Law-enforcement authorities said the allegations and cases would be investigated to establish what actually occurred.
The incidents have heightened political tensions in parts of Sylhet and Habiganj. Additional security measures have reportedly been taken in several areas. However, no final investigation report has yet established who was responsible for the alleged attacks or confirmed the validity of the accusations in the cases.
The conflicting accounts from the NCP and law-enforcement authorities mean that the allegations should be treated as unverified until the investigations are completed.
