An explosion occurred inside a sand-filled sack kept beside the home of Shah Alam Hawladar in Dudhalmou village, Bhorpasha union, Bakerganj upazila, Barishal, at about 7 a.m. on 3 August 2026.
The blast burned Hanufa Begum, Shah Alam's wife; Iti Akhtar (18), his daughter; and Fahim (15), his grandson.
The three jumped into the nearby Tulatala river after they caught fire, and local residents rescued them.
They were taken first to Bakerganj Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.
Shah Alam's son Jamal Hossain said the blast happened inside the sand sack and that the family did not know where the explosive came from.
Bakergonj police station officer-in-charge Adil Hossain said the incident was being investigated seriously and that the type of explosive and possible involvement of individuals would only be confirmed after the inquiry.
Barishal district police superintendent A Z M Mustafizur Rahman said authorities did not yet know what kind of explosive it was or whether more explosives existed, and that a bomb disposal unit from Dhaka had been notified and was expected to arrive by the afternoon.
Hospital nurse Lincoln Datta said the two women were transferred to a female surgery ward, but their exact burn percentages were not immediately known.
