Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Dhaka South unit held a rally at Science Lab intersection in Dhaka on 2 August, marking the second anniversary of the July uprising.
Assistant Secretary General Rafiq-ul Islam Khan attended as chief guest.
He alleged that the BNP government had overridden the referendum result by relying on its majority.
Rafiq-ul Islam Khan claimed that 70% of people had backed the referendum outcome.
He said the vote supported state reforms and urged the government to implement the July Charter.
He said his party would seek to pressure the government to act if the charter was not implemented.
Rafiq-ul Islam Khan also alleged that members of the interim government had acted to prevent Jamaat from entering the political mainstream.
Dhaka University Central Students’ Union vice-president Abu Sadiq Kayem alleged that the post-uprising government had become partisan and was making political appointments.
The event was chaired by Helal Uddin, a central working committee member and Nayeb-e-Ameer of Jamaat’s Dhaka South unit.
Helal Uddin said the party’s movement would continue until the referendum result was accepted and the July Charter implemented.
