Jamaat-e-Islami expelled Omar Faruk, a 35-year-old ward-level rukon of its Bargachhi union unit in Paba upazila, Rajshahi, after he was detained over allegations that he sexually harassed a nine-year-old girl.
Bargachhi union Jamaat amir Abdur Rahman Milon confirmed the expulsion on Monday, saying the party had spoken to the victim's family, found preliminary truth in the complaint, and acted against a 'moral lapse'.
Milon said the decision was taken unanimously at a Sunday upazila Jamaat meeting attended by union-level leaders.
Faruk, a resident of Pakarmatha village, worked as a village doctor and ran a pharmacy, and he tutored children at his home with his wife.
His brother Abu Bakr is secretary of the same ward unit.
According to the case statement, on July 12 the girl went to his tuition as usual and Faruk allegedly sent the other students away and sexually harassed her; she returned home crying and told her mother, prompting the family to decide on legal action.
Police detained Faruk from his home on Friday evening, the child's mother filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act at Paba police station that night, and a court sent him to Rajshahi Central Jail the next morning.
Faruk remains in Rajshahi Central Jail in connection with the case.
