The High Court has directed the Health Ministry to recover and hand over land associated with the Infectious Diseases Hospital in Mohakhali within 30 days.
The ministry must also submit a report to the court on compliance with the directive.
A High Court bench comprising Justice Khizir Ahmed Chowdhury and Justice Md Ziaul Haque issued the order and a rule after a preliminary hearing of a public-interest writ on 3 August.
Lawyer Md Shafiqul Islam Mizan represented the petitioner at the hearing.
Hospital authorities said 32 acres had been allocated to the hospital, with about eight acres used for the main seven-storey building, staff housing, a mosque and a water pump.
The authorities said other parts of the land contained structures built by government bodies without allocation documents being found, while a substantial area of vacant land had been occupied by outsiders.
They identified homes, shops, a market, an ice factory, and rickshaw and auto-rickshaw garages among the structures they said had been built there.
