Youth and Sports State Minister Aminul Haque said 503 mini stadiums will be built across Bangladesh, adding that the second phase of work has begun and land acquisition is under way.
He spoke as special guest at the final of the Deputy Commissioner Gold Cup football tournament at Tangail's Shaheed Maruf Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Haque said that under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's instruction, the authorities want to develop sports-worthy grounds in 4,593 unions.
He said sports are meant to build a healthy nation, keep children away from mobile phones and other addictions, and help create a drug-free society.
Fisheries and Livestock State Minister Sultan Salauddin Tuku was the chief guest, Textiles and Jute State Minister Md. Shariful Alam was a special guest, and Deputy Commissioner Sharifa Haque presided.
Tangail Sadar Upazila beat Gopalpur Upazila 1-0 to win the title.
More than 100,000 spectators watched the final at the stadium, the first such gathering there in nearly two decades.
Among those present were lawmakers Abdus Salam Pintu and Rabiul Awal Lablu, district BNP president Hasanuzzaman Shaheen, former member secretary Mahmudul Haque Sanu, and Sadar upazila executive officer Md. Shaheen Mia.
