On 1 August, the second anniversary of the July 2024 uprising, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami held processions and short rallies in Pakundia and Bhairab in Kishoreganj and in Sylhet city, demanding implementation of the referendum verdict and July Charter and trial for the July killings.
In Kishoreganj, a procession in Pakundia started from the upazila livestock hospital field and ended at Patmahal Mor, while a second procession in Bhairab began at Kamalpur Haji Market and ended at the municipality Shaheed Minar.
Speakers in both Kishoreganj rallies, including district and upazila party leaders, said the country still had not implemented the referendum verdict and July Charter, and they demanded a trial for killings during the 2024 uprising.
Bhairab speakers alleged that the current government had not fulfilled pre-election promises or taken necessary action to try the killings, and the party warned of further programmes if no effective steps followed.
At a Sylhet gathering before the march, Jamaat central assistant secretary general Advocate Ehsanul Mahbub Jubaer said the ruling BNP, after taking power, had ignored the July Charter and cancelled the referendum verdict, deceiving the nation.
Jubaer also said the previous government had banned Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatra Shibir on 1 August to stop the 2024 uprising, and he cited figures of 1,500 martyrs and more than 30,000 wounded.
The Sylhet march, organized by Sylhet metropolis Jamaat, proceeded from Court Point through major points and ended with a short rally at Chouhatta.
Organizers of the Kishoreganj processions said party workers, supporters and people from different professions took part and that the programmes ended peacefully.
