A total of 157 migrants were rescued after a small boat caught fire in the English Channel while travelling from France toward the United Kingdom.
The French Channel and North Sea Maritime Prefecture said the fire started in the vessel's engine.
It said the incident occurred on Tuesday morning as the boat was attempting to reach the United Kingdom.
French authorities said the boat had departed the French coast on Monday night.
Five people were rescued during an overnight operation, while the remaining passengers initially declined assistance offered by a French patrol vessel, the authorities said.
The authorities said the boat's structure deteriorated after the fire, raising concern that it could sink.
French and British rescue teams then carried out a joint operation to bring those aboard to safety.
French rescue vessels recovered 103 people and British vessels recovered 54, French authorities said.
The rescued people were being taken to the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer in northern France.
They were due to receive medical attention and health checks there, French authorities said.
No deaths, injuries or missing people had been reported at the time of the rescue.
