India's Ministry of External Affairs said it has no involvement in an upcoming virtual media event in New Delhi at which Bangladesh's ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is planned to speak.
Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told a weekly briefing on Tuesday that the event is being organized by a private media outlet and that the Indian government neither supports nor endorses any opinions expressed there.
Jaiswal said the event is being arranged by the Foreign Correspondents Club of South Asia and that India has no role in it.
Bangladesh has conveyed its deep concern to India over plans for Hasina, who has been in India since leaving Dhaka last year, to address the event.
Dhaka said such an event could negatively affect the recent positive trajectory in bilateral relations.
On Monday, Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir discussed the issue in Dhaka with India's newly appointed High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi.
Jaiswal said Bangladesh's Prime Minister Tariq Rahman was invited, as current BIMSTEC chair, to the outreach session of the 18th BRICS summit scheduled for September 12-13 in New Delhi.
Bangladesh's foreign ministry said it received the BRICS invitation and sent it to the prime minister's office for a final decision, with a ministry official noting that Dhaka is due to host a BIMSTEC summit in 2027, the grouping's 30th anniversary.
