Deepti Saha, a professor at the University of Dhaka, died on 31 July 2026 at a hospital in Dhaka; she was 58 years old.
She served as the 17th departmental head and chairperson of the university's Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.
A university public relations office statement said Saha became unconscious after food lodged in her airway during breakfast and that doctors at the hospital declared her dead.
Vice-Chancellor A B M Obaidul Islam expressed deep grief and said in a condolence message that she was a distinguished teacher and researcher whose contributions to the country's education and research would keep her in memory.
Her body was taken to the department on Friday afternoon so teachers and students could pay respects, and the acting registrar laid flowers on the coffin on behalf of the vice-chancellor.
The cremation took place at Postogola crematorium; she was from Horiarpara, Enayetnagar, Narayanganj, and is survived by a brother and a sister.
On 1 August, the department's alumni association expressed deep grief and condolences to her family.
