A confrontation broke out at the provost’s office of Dhaka University’s Dr Muhammad Shahidullah Hall during an administrative inquiry on Sunday.

The inquiry concerned an allegation that two visitors in hall union assistant general secretary Ibrahim Khalil’s room had engaged in same-sex activity.

The allegation has not been established, and no official finding from the inquiry was stated.

The hall administration had summoned Khalil and his roommate before the inquiry committee.

Khalil said a maternal cousin, who had come to Dhaka for medical treatment, had sought permission to rest in the room with another person.

He said he was away from the hall when the incident in the room allegedly occurred and learned of it through a video circulated on social media.

Chhatra Dal convener Mosaddik Al Haq alleged that Shibir activists attacked Chhatra Dal members at the provost’s office.

He also alleged that CCTV footage from the previous day had been deleted to obscure whether Khalil was present at the relevant time.

Hall union general secretary Toukir Hasan instead alleged that Chhatra Dal members entered the inquiry and later attacked a Shibir member over claims that photographs had been taken.

Hasan further alleged that another attack followed when video was being recorded inside the provost’s room.

Both sides said some of their members were injured, but neither side provided a verified number or details of injuries.

House tutor Md Anwar Hossain Bhuiyan said an altercation occurred outside during discussions about the inquiry and that hall staff calmed the situation.

Proctor Israfil Ratan said a proctorial team was sent to the hall, mediated between the groups and brought the situation under control.

Ratan said the incident was being investigated and that further action would follow the inquiry.

Both groups claimed that hall provost Md Aminul Islam Bhuiyan had resigned, but Vice-Chancellor Niaz Ahmed Khan said he had not resigned.
