In a report issued on August 1, the Road Safety Foundation said 1,849 road crashes in Dhaka from 2020 to July 2026 killed 1,384 people and injured 2,488.
Of those killed, 1,034 were men, 219 were women and 131 were children; the foundation said pedestrians made up 42.77% of deaths and motorcycle riders 38.72%.
It recorded the highest share of deaths, 37.50%, in night-time crashes, followed by morning (18.64%), noon (14.8%), afternoon (12.57%), dawn (10.26%) and evening (6.93%).
The foundation's vehicle analysis said trucks, covered vans, pickups, tankers and garbage trucks were involved in 33.25% of crashes, motorcycles in 26%, buses in 21.75%, auto-rickshaws, CNGs and legunas in 12.73%, and microbuses, private cars and jeeps in 6.25%.
It attributed the toll to reckless night-time driving by heavy vehicles, driver impatience caused by long traffic jams, insufficient roads, mixed-speed traffic on the same roads, encroached footpaths and a lack of safe crossing facilities.
The organization identified Jatrabari, Demra, Mohammadpur, Kuril Bishwa Road and Airport Road as crash hotspots.
It recommended route rationalization with company-based bus services and stronger coordinated action by BRTA, BRTC, DTCA, city corporations and traffic police.
