The National University has announced a five-year roadmap to plant at least 20 million trees across Bangladesh, engaging more than 2,300 affiliated colleges and about 4 million students.
The plan was discussed at a coordination meeting held on 30 July at the university's Dhanmondi city office, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr A S M Amanullah.
Under the 'One Student-One Tree' component, each student would plant at least one tree per academic year, an estimated 4 million trees annually.
The university aims to ensure at least 80 percent survival of planted trees through digital monitoring, district- and division-level observation, and an accountability framework.
The 'Green Campus–Green Energy' component is intended to reduce carbon emissions and create environment-friendly, green campuses in line with UN sustainable development goals.
Amanullah said successful implementation would play a historic role in protecting the environment, reducing adverse climate impacts, and building a green, sustainable Bangladesh.
Environmental experts at the meeting called the initiative timely and far-sighted in helping students become environment-friendly, responsible citizens.
A high-level coordination committee will be formed, and the program will begin with pilot projects in selected colleges before expanding nationwide.
