The National Standing Committee, BNP's highest policymaking body, met on the evening of 1 August at the party chairman's office in Gulshan, Dhaka; party chair and Prime Minister Tareque Rahman presided.
The agenda included the party's presidential candidate nomination and the election process, the current political situation, strategic assessment, and organizational matters.
The committee unanimously entrusted Tareque Rahman with finalizing the presidential nomination.
Party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said after the meeting that the responsibility for the presidential election had been given to Tareque Rahman.
Standing Committee member and Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said that if a special session is needed for the presidential election after the schedule announcement, the decision would be made in consultation with the Speaker.
The meeting also discussed what it described as anti-government propaganda and conspiracy by Jamaat-e-Islami and the NCP, and possible countermeasures.
The upcoming local government elections were also discussed in detail.
