The Education Ministry has made an in-principle decision to retain lottery-based admission to Class 1 for the 2027 academic year.
The decision reverses a plan to introduce entrance examinations for first-grade admission.
A senior Education Ministry official said on August 3 that Class 1 admissions would continue through a lottery.
The official said applicants for Classes 2 through 9 would still be required to sit admission tests.
The ministry reconsidered the Class 1 test plan to reduce competitive and psychological pressure on young children.
The prospect of admission tests had prompted concern among some parents over preparation demands, including coaching and private tutoring.
Parents Unity Forum president Ziaul Kabir Dulu welcomed the planned continuation of the Class 1 lottery.
Dulu said lottery-based admission should extend to all primary grades, arguing that it could reduce reliance on admission coaching and unequal competition.
