At least 10 people were reported injured in clashes between Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Islami Chhatra Shibir activists at Barishal University on 5 August.

The confrontation took place in the morning as the university unit of Chhatra Shibir held a rally titled 'Odommo July.'

An argument began after Chhatra Dal activists objected to the alleged presence of outsiders in the rally, before escalating into a clash and repeated chases and counter-chases.

Chhatra Dal senior vice-president Ashik Ahmed alleged that Shibir brought outsiders into the campus procession, with flags attached to sticks, and attacked after being asked to conduct the programme without them.

Ahmed said five to six Chhatra Dal activists were injured.

Chhatra Shibir general secretary Zakaria Islam Babu said the rally was a peaceful programme marking the anniversary of the July uprising and alleged that Chhatra Dal activists attacked it while it moved from the ground floor toward the VC Gate.

Babu said about five Shibir activists were injured and that a complaint seeking action had been submitted to the vice-chancellor.

He also alleged that the incident occurred in the presence of university authorities and that the proctor's efforts did not stop the violence.

Barishal Metropolitan Police ADC Belal Hossain said police went to the campus after learning of the clash, deployed additional personnel and urged both sides to remain calm.

The evidence does not establish who started the violence, whether outsiders joined the rally, the identities or medical condition of those injured, or any action by the university administration.
