Rajshahi University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Faridul Islam said on Wednesday that internal divisions could allow fascist forces to resurface, urging unity among all who took part in the July uprising.

He made the remarks at a discussion meeting held at the university's Senate building to mark July Mass Uprising Day.

The vice-chancellor said fascism has departed but its resurgence should not be given a chance, adding that fascists are smiling at the divisions within society.

He called on political parties, organizations and citizens involved in the July movement to avoid actions that create division or weaken the spirit of the uprising.

Islam said the reasons why the July uprising occurred and became inevitable must be remembered repeatedly, and the achievements should be used to build the future Bangladesh.

He stressed that the sacrifices of July martyrs and wounded fighters should not be in vain and that their expectations and anxieties must be understood.

The vice-chancellor said unity, democracy and a justice-based state are the means to realize the true spirit of the July uprising.

The meeting was chaired by Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Mamunur Rashid, with Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Alim as special guest, and was attended by teachers, students and staff.
