A fire broke out at a British American Tobacco Bangladesh tobacco warehouse in Nalam, Ashulia, on Wednesday.

The fire was reported to have started between about 7am and 7:30am.

Nearby residents saw smoke and flames from the rear of the warehouse and initially tried to put out the fire.

Firefighters from the Zirabo station were sent to the site after the emergency services were alerted.

The blaze spread through the warehouse, prompting the dispatch of further crews.

Seven fire-service units ultimately joined the operation.

The accounts differ over the number of units sent from individual stations, although both give the total as seven.

Four industrial-police teams also assisted at the scene.

The fire was brought under control after about five hours.

DEPDZ Fire Service Senior Station Officer Konok Chowdhury said the cause of the fire and the extent of losses could not yet be determined.
