First-grade admissions will be decided by lottery from the 2027 academic year, the Education Ministry said in a notice issued on 6 August.
No admission test will be held for first-grade applicants under the new arrangement.
The ministry said admissions to all other grades in primary and secondary schools will be conducted through admission tests.
Senior Information Officer Abdullah Shibli Sadiq signed the ministry notice.
In March, Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon had said the government intended to introduce admission tests for every grade from 2027.
He described the proposed tests at that time as simple rather than complex.
Lottery-based admission for first grade in government secondary schools was first introduced in the 2011 academic year and extended to private schools in 2012.
Admission tests continued for grades two through nine at that stage.
Lottery-based admission for all grades began from the 2021 academic year during the COVID-19 pandemic and has continued since then.
The notice did not set out procedures, eligibility criteria or a timetable for the lottery or the admission tests.
