Gopalganj Science and Technology University has said it will investigate complaints over food served at a feast for students living in five residential halls.
The feast was arranged on 5 August to mark July Mass Uprising Day for residents of Titumir, Victory Day, Independence Day, Bonolota and Aparajita halls.
Students objected to the food quality, and the disagreement developed into an argument, physical confrontation and chasing, the provost of Independence Day Hall, Mohammad Asaduzzaman Khan, said.
Titumir Hall resident Rakiul Alam Rana alleged that many of the eggs were spoiled and that chicken entrails were found in lentils.
Eyewitness accounts said Habibur Rahman, member secretary of the university unit of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and a political science student, urged students to remain calm and made favourable comments about the food.
The eyewitness accounts said several students then assaulted Rahman, leaving him injured.
The provost said no written complaint had yet been received and that action would follow an investigation if one was filed.
Vice-Chancellor Nazmus Sadat said the food-quality issue would be examined urgently and those involved in the incident would be held accountable.
Students sought a fair inquiry, action against those responsible and assurances of quality food in all residential halls.
