Jason Arday has resigned from his professorship at the University of Cambridge, with the resignation taking immediate effect.
Cambridge said it began an investigation after receiving new information concerning Arday’s academic qualifications and honorary appointments.
The university said allegations of research misconduct were also being reviewed under its policies and that the process would be conducted fairly and lawfully.
Nathan Cofnas alleged that Arday’s research contained numerous instances of plagiarism and also questioned some of his academic achievements.
Arday acknowledged errors in his research but said he was not dishonest.
He said becoming a Cambridge professor had been the greatest professional honour of his life.
Arday said sustained public criticism and personal attacks had caused personal harm and pressure that he could no longer manage.
He said his decision was made with his wellbeing, family and supporters in mind.
Arday said the resignation should not be read as a loss of faith in education, research or the values that brought him to Cambridge.
He said he needed time to recover and intended to return to academic work.
Jesus College has also opened a separate inquiry alongside the university investigation.
No outcome from the inquiries, or finding on the allegations, has been stated.
