Jagannath University has banned all meetings, rallies and processions inside the campus until further notice.
A notice signed by Proctor Mohammad Nasir Uddin said three organisations had announced gatherings at the same place and time.
The administration said it imposed the restriction after considering the law-and-order situation.
The notice said all active student organisations at the university had been informed of the decision.
The timing of the notice is unclear: one account places its issuance on the night of 6 August, while another says it was issued on the night of 5 August.
The restriction followed a clash involving student political groups during programmes held earlier that week.
The number of people injured in that clash is disputed, with one account citing at least 70 injuries and another saying several students, including JAKSU leaders, were injured.
Chhatra Shibir, Chhatra Shakti and Chhatra Front activists alleged that Chhatra Dal activists attacked them and people receiving treatment.
The Chhatra Dal branch said Chhatra Shibir had attempted to create a mob and that other students resisted it.
