The university's public relations office said Deepti Saha, a 58-year-old professor in the Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Dhaka University, died at a hospital in the capital after food became lodged in her windpipe during breakfast on Friday, July 31.
She lost consciousness after choking and was taken immediately to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
In a condolence message, Vice-Chancellor Professor A B M Obaidul Islam described Saha as a distinguished teacher and researcher.
The vice-chancellor said she would be remembered for her extraordinary contributions to education and research in the country.
He also prayed for peace for the deceased and expressed deep sympathy for her grieving family.
Her body was brought to the department on Friday afternoon so teachers and students could pay their respects.
The acting registrar, on behalf of the vice-chancellor, placed flowers on the coffin, and the last rites were completed at the Postogola crematorium.
