The Bangladesh Nationalist Party's National Standing Committee is due to meet on Saturday evening, with party sources saying the agenda is expected to cover the nomination of a party candidate for president, the current political situation, and organizational matters.
The same sources said the election of a new president is likely to be the main item, and that the party's top leadership plans to complete that election within August.
Multiple committee members indicated the final decision on the nomination could be left to party chairman Tarique Rahman.
At a Bogura event on 26 July, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the decision on whether to field a party or non-party candidate would be made by the standing committee in line with the constitution and law.
No senior BNP leader has publicly discussed specific potential candidates, but party insiders are most prominently mentioning Fakhrul, along with standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Abdul Moin Khan and Nazrul Islam Khan.
President Mohammad Sahabuddin resigned on 24 July, and Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed is serving as acting president under the constitution, which requires the new president to be elected within 90 days of the vacancy.
Party sources said the electoral method BNP had proposed in its 31-point programme or July Charter is not being applied this time, so under existing constitutional provisions a candidate nominated by the parliamentary majority is more likely to be elected.
Party sources said the meeting could also discuss strengthening organizational work after incidents of clashes with the National Citizens Party in various places and political tensions around the first anniversary of the July uprising.
