A Faridpur district police internal inquiry has recommended departmental cases and disciplinary action against 11 police officers over the death of Mirza Ishtiaq Ahmed in Detective Branch custody.
Police Superintendent Shahriar Mohammad Miahzi confirmed that the inquiry report and recommendations had been sent to Police Headquarters.
The recommendation covers the former Detective Branch officer-in-charge and 10 other officers who took part in the operation.
Ishtiaq, 27, was detained outside his home in the West Gondhardia area of Madhukhali on June 20.
He was a Faridpur Law College student and a seasonal worker at the Faridpur sugar mill.
He fell ill while in Detective Branch custody and died after being taken to Faridpur Medical College Hospital on June 21.
The day after his detention, Detective Branch Sub-Inspector Ahaduzzaman filed a narcotics case alleging the recovery of 100 grams of cannabis from Ishtiaq.
That case narrative says the recovery occurred at about 2am and that Ishtiaq, wearing trousers, produced the cannabis from his pocket.
Video footage was described as showing the incident in daylight, with Ishtiaq wearing a lungi rather than trousers.
Two witnesses listed in the narcotics case said they were not at the location and that their signatures had been obtained through intimidation.
Ishtiaq’s family alleged that Detective Branch officers had demanded Tk100,000 for his release.
Miahzi said officers involved in the operation had roles in criminal misconduct, and that subsequent departmental proceedings should determine each officer’s responsibility.
The 11 officers were withdrawn from their posts and attached to the Faridpur Police Lines after the incident.
