A Dhaka additional chief metropolitan magistrate’s court sent folk singer Mujib Pardeshi to jail on 4 August in a cheque dishonour case.
He was produced before the court after his arrest by Uttara West police on 3 August, prosecution sub-inspector Helal Uddin said.
Helal Uddin said police sought an order to keep him in custody, and the court then issued the jail order.
The prosecution officer said Pardeshi had no lawyer representing him at the hearing.
Case materials state that Idris Ali Biswas filed the case in a Magura court in 2022 over an alleged dishonoured cheque worth Tk10 lakh.
Those materials state that the Magura second joint sessions judge sentenced Pardeshi on 15 March 2023 to one year of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a Tk10 lakh fine.
The materials further state that an arrest warrant was issued after the judgment because he was treated as absconding.
The complainant’s lawyer, Shafiqul Islam, argued against bail and alleged that Pardeshi had known about the case while remaining absconding.
Pardeshi’s given name is Mujibur Rahman Molla, and he became widely known as a folk singer during the 1980s.
