The Sylhet Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board seized a sack of HSC Bangla second-paper answer scripts from a tea stall near the main gate of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology on the night of 1 August.
The board’s examination controller, Professor Bilkis Yasmin, said officials went to the site after receiving information that a teacher was reviewing answer scripts in a public place.
Witnesses alleged that lecturer Iqbal Hossain Sohan was at the stall with friends and that two companions were also looking at scripts.
Sohan is identified as a lecturer at Metrocity Women’s College in Sylhet and a former student of the university’s Bangla department.
Sohan reportedly told officials that the group had not been marking scripts, saying they were only matching code numbers because of time pressure.
That account differs from witnesses’ allegation that the papers were being evaluated at the stall.
Board officials and police attended the location, and Sohan was subsequently taken to Jalalabad Police Station.
Jalalabad Police Station officer-in-charge Shamsul Habib said the board filed a general diary in the presence of its officials.
Habib said the scripts were in the board’s custody and that Sohan was handed to board officials after required legal formalities.
Professor Yasmin said script evaluation is governed by board rules and directives, and that administrative action would follow its investigation.
The evidence does not establish a final administrative finding or any criminal charge against Sohan.
