BNP’s National Standing Committee was scheduled to meet on Saturday evening.
Unidentified party figures said the meeting would cover a possible presidential nomination, the political situation and organisational matters.
Those figures said the presidential election was likely to be the principal issue and that party leaders hoped to complete the election during August.
On 26 July, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the Standing Committee would decide, in line with the constitution and law, whether to nominate a party member or an independent candidate.
Unidentified BNP leaders said the final choice could be referred to party chairperson Tarique Rahman.
No senior BNP leader had publicly identified a prospective candidate, the party figures said.
They said Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Abdul Moyeen Khan and Nazrul Islam Khan were among names under discussion.
The same party accounts said President Md Shahabuddin resigned on 24 July and that Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed had assumed the role of acting president.
They also said the constitution requires a presidential election within 90 days of a vacancy.
Party figures said proposed changes to the presidential-election method would not be used on this occasion, leaving the existing constitutional process in place.
