Nafiz Ahmed Khan Raju, a former local BNP leader, was injured in an attack outside his home in Khoksa's Thanapara area at about 10:30pm on 5 August.
Both accounts say the assailants used sharp weapons and that Raju was taken for medical treatment.
An emergency physician said Raju had a sharp-weapon injury to his right leg and that fractures in his right arm and three fingers of his left hand were initially suspected.
The physician said he was referred for advanced treatment.
Police said unidentified assailants fled after the attack, but the accounts differ on whether they used two or three motorcycles.
Khoksa police station officer-in-charge Molla Zakir Hossain said police were working to identify and arrest those involved.
One account says attackers fired at the home's gate, while another also alleges that crude explosives were detonated; the latter claim has not been independently corroborated within this evidence set.
Raju alleged that the attack was planned to deter him from running in the forthcoming Khoksa municipal election.
He also alleged that he had previously informed authorities about security concerns, but no finding on that allegation was provided.
His precise BNP designation is unclear: he is described variously as a former municipal general secretary and as a former senior joint convener of the upazila unit.
