Md Mizanur Rahman Khan, alias Monir Khan, a 48-year-old Patuakhali district Awami League member and former vice-chairman of Patuakhali Sadar upazila parishad, died on August 5, 2026, while receiving treatment in the ICU of the burn and plastic surgery unit at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
He had gone into hiding after the political change of August 5, 2024, and was arrested on September 14, 2025, from Mintu Road in Dhaka by the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police.
He faced eight cases, six in Dhaka and two in Patuakhali, and was held for about 11 months in Dhaka and Patuakhali jails; his wife, Mosammat Salma Jahan, was also arrested with him and spent several days in jail.
His wife said he suffered a stroke on June 9 while in jail and was moved to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, transferred to the ICU on June 14, and placed on life support two days later.
Salma Jahan said the last of his eight cases ended in bail on July 30, after bail had been granted in the other seven cases.
Relatives said that after a photo of him handcuffed in the ICU spread on social media and drew nationwide criticism, he was granted bail in all the cases one by one, but his physical condition did not improve.
According to his wife, police removed the handcuffs after the controversy, but by then his health had severely deteriorated.
His uncle Abdul Kalam Azad said the janaza would be held on Thursday at Patuakhali Sadar upazila field, followed by burial in the family graveyard.
