Bangladesh's permanent mission to the United Nations marked the second anniversary of the July mass uprising with a memorial reception on 5 August.
Permanent representatives and diplomats of UN member states, as well as senior officials of the UN and other international organizations, attended the reception.
Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, Bangladesh's permanent representative to the UN, paid tribute to those who died in the uprising and described it as a historical expression of the people's collective aspiration for democracy, justice, accountability and human dignity.
He also outlined the government's "Three R" strategy of recovery, restoration and reconstruction, saying it aims to restore economic stability, rebuild state institutions' capacity and consolidate the basis of sustainable development.
A documentary on the uprising's background and significance was screened during the UN event.
Bangladesh Maritime University in Dhaka's Pallabi area also marked the day, opening an art exhibition titled "Canvas of July" by Vice-Chancellor Rear Admiral Dr. Khondkar Akhtar Hossain and holding a discussion session.
University speakers remembered those killed in the uprising and urged everyone to help build a discrimination-free, humane and prosperous Bangladesh, saying educational institutions are vital for passing the uprising's spirit to the new generation.
The university also gave financial donations to its students injured in the uprising and offered prayers for the martyrs and the wounded.
