President Donald Trump said the United States would continue its military strikes on Iran with greater force and reiterated that Washington aims to win the conflict and prevent Iran from ever obtaining a nuclear weapon.
Trump spoke to reporters after a cabinet meeting at Camp David, Maryland, on 31 July.
He rejected the view that Iran remains strong, saying Iran is in very poor condition, dishonest and difficult to deal with, and claimed that US operations had 'completely destroyed' Iran's military capability within five months, a campaign he compared with the wars in Vietnam and Afghanistan.
Trump expressed declining trust in ongoing negotiations with Iran, saying his confidence was falling 'because they lie'.
Trump said that while US special envoy Steve Witkoff was waiting for a phone call, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth informed him that Iran had fired five missiles at a US base in Jordan.
Recent weeks have seen US strikes on Iranian facilities after Iranian attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz, and Tehran has said it retaliated by targeting US military bases in Jordan and the Gulf region.
The US and Iran signed a Pakistan-mediated framework agreement in June to end the war, but tit-for-tat attacks have since renewed tensions.
