The July mass uprising anniversary was marked with discussion meetings at the Bangladesh embassy in Paris on August 4 and in Kaptai upazila, Rangamati, on August 5.
The Kaptai meeting, organized by the upazila administration, was held at the upazila parishad conference room and chaired by Upazila Executive Officer Md. Raihanul Islam.
Speakers at Kaptai called the uprising a historic mass movement for democracy, justice, human rights and voting rights and emphasized passing its history and spirit on to the new generation.
Md. Raihanul Islam said the uprising was an important chapter in national history and urged a responsible role in building a corruption-free, non-discriminatory, developed Bangladesh.
The Paris event was presided over by Khondkar M. Talha, Bangladesh's permanent representative to UNESCO and ambassador to France and Monaco.
Messages from the acting president, prime minister, foreign minister and state minister for foreign affairs were read at the Paris programme, which began with Quran recitation and a minute of silence for those killed in the uprising.
The embassy said the Paris event was held a day early because consular services for Bangladeshi expatriates, including passport-related services, would run on a limited basis on August 5.
Expatriate Bangladeshi community leaders from political, social, cultural and business backgrounds attended the Paris event.
