Prime Minister Tarek Rahman chaired a Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) Governing Board meeting on 3 August at the Secretariat in Dhaka.
The meeting focused on expanding economic zones, increasing investment, creating employment and protecting the environment.
As part of the government's 250 million tree plantation programme, the board decided to plant 125,000 trees in export processing zones across the country.
The board reviewed implementation of its ninth governing board meeting's decisions and discussed establishing new economic zones, evaluating private economic zones and using idle state-owned industrial assets.
It also examined using the land and existing infrastructure of Karim Jute Mills and Latif Bawany Jute Mills in Narayanganj to attract domestic and foreign investment and create jobs.
The meeting discussed following guidelines and framing new policy for private economic zone licence and application procedures.
Prime Minister Tarek Rahman called for economic zones to be built as green, modern and investment-friendly industrial areas, ensuring environmental conservation alongside industrialisation.
Ministers for finance, commerce, environment, road transport and expatriates' welfare, along with BIDA Executive Chairman Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun, attended the meeting.
