Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur has requested that Section 144 be imposed after Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir announced separate programmes near the main gate.
Proctor Ferdous Rahman submitted the written request to Tazhat Police Station, citing concern that the programmes could disrupt campus order.
Tazhat Police Station officer-in-charge Rafiqul Islam said Section 144 had not been imposed at that point, while preparations were in place to address any disorder.
The tension followed clashes on 3 August that began around a Chhatra Shibir exhibition on campus.
The university administration said at least 25 students were injured, with five seriously injured students receiving treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
Chhatra Shibir president Abdur Rakib alleged that Chhatra Dal members attacked an exhibition that had been arranged with administrative permission.
A Chhatra Dal leader, Yamin, alleged that Shibir members attacked after Chhatra Dal sought the removal of a banner carrying images of several Jamaat leaders convicted of war crimes.
A Chhatra Dal city unit official said the group planned a protest march, rally and sit-in at Abu Sayeed Square from 4pm.
A Chhatra Shibir city unit official said its group planned a march from Lalbagh Square to Abu Sayeed Square, followed by a rally.
Vice-Chancellor Mohammad Shawkat Ali said a five-member investigation committee had been formed and instructed to examine video footage and submit its findings promptly.
The university also barred visitors and vehicles, including bicycles, motorcycles, autorickshaws and private cars, from entering the campus from 4 August until further notice.
The outcome of the request for Section 144 and the investigation had not been established.
