Activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Islami Chhatra Shibir clashed in several rounds at Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur on Monday, 3 August.
At least 10 people from the two groups were reported injured.
The confrontation began after Chhatra Dal objected to a banner displayed at a Chhatra Shibir exhibition marking the July uprising.
The banner included images of figures convicted of war crimes, which prompted Chhatra Dal to seek its removal.
An argument at the exhibition site escalated into chases and counter-chases between the groups.
Accounts described brick throwing and the use or throwing of chairs during the confrontation.
Shibir office secretary Shibli Sadiq alleged that Chhatra Dal activists attacked after pressing for the banner to be removed, including in a later round after tensions had eased.
Chhatra Dal president Mohammad Yamin alleged that Shibir activists threw chairs and attacked after the demand to remove the banner.
Chhatra Dal also alleged that Shibir activists from Carmichael College and other locations joined the violence, an allegation Shibir denied.
The groups later took positions at different points on and near the campus, where they exchanged slogans.
The confrontation disrupted traffic on the Rangpur-Dhaka highway for about three and a half hours, affecting road links towards Kurigram and Lalmonirhat.
Proctor Ferdous Rahman said the university would review video footage, form an inquiry committee and take action under its rules against those found responsible.
Those injured received primary treatment, while responsibility for initiating the violence remains disputed between the groups.
