Mahfuz Sarkar Rakib, identified as the Gaibandha district president of Islami Chhatra Andolan, married a local woman in Kanchipara Union of Fulchhari upazila.
Kanchipara Union chairman Sohel Rana Shalu said the marriage was arranged through local mediation and set a dower amount of Tk700,000.
Shalu said Rakib and the woman had been in a relationship before the marriage.
Local residents alleged that they detained Rakib after finding him at the woman’s family home late at night in what they described as an objectionable situation.
Rakib rejected that allegation and said the two families’ guardians had gathered at the home to discuss the marriage.
He said he remained there overnight because of those discussions and that the marriage was completed by family arrangement the following morning.
Rakib also said secretly recorded video fragments circulating online were misleading and meant to harm his reputation.
He said he would pursue legal action against people involved in recording or sharing the material.
