Prime Minister Tarique Rahman held a meeting with specialists on addressing water-management challenges and pursuing sustainable solutions in Bangladesh.
The discussion took place on 4 August at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Cabinet Division at the Bangladesh Secretariat.
Environmental, water and engineering specialists, along with representatives of relevant organisations, attended the meeting led by Footsteps Bangladesh.
Participants discussed existing constraints in water management, potential remedies and the need for long- and medium-term planning.
The specialists recommended using modern technology, improving coordination among agencies and accounting for the effects of climate change in future measures.
The agenda included canal restoration, the stability of rivers and embankments, improvements to urban drainage, wastewater treatment and rainwater management.
Participants also stressed the need for integrated urban planning as urbanisation accelerates.
Rahman sought the experts’ cooperation in supporting sustainable development, environmental protection and safe, effective water management.
State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam and Principal Secretary A. B. M. Abdus Sattar were among those present.
