A passenger ferry caught fire at sea near Indonesia’s Madura Island on 2 August.
Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency said five people had died and 41 were missing.
The agency said 225 people had been rescued alive.
There were 271 passengers and crew aboard, the agency said.
The reported numbers of rescued survivors, deaths and missing people add up to the total aboard.
The ferry was travelling from Surabaya in East Java to Makassar in South Sulawesi.
The captain alerted authorities after the fire began.
Nanang Sigit, head of the Surabaya search-and-rescue office, said several nearby vessels joined the rescue operation.
Images described in the evidence showed smoke and flames on the vessel, while passengers wearing life jackets gathered on deck or entered lifeboats.
Search operations for those still missing were continuing.
The cause of the fire and the identities of those killed were not immediately known.
