Police in south Kolkata arrested Anubhav Bhattacharya after a woman filed a written complaint at Purba Jadavpur police station accusing him of rape.

According to the police account, the woman met Bhattacharya on social media, later exchanged phone numbers and met him before he invited her to a birthday party at a flat where she said no one else was present.

She alleged that he raped her, raped her again after promising marriage, then took 150,000 rupees from her citing business needs and stopped responding to her.

Police said the arrest followed an inquiry into the complaint.

In Netrokona Sadar, local residents detained content creator Ripon Mia on the night of 3 August over allegations of an extramarital relationship, and a social-media video showed a village arbitration about the matter.

The video claims Mia, who is married and has a son and a daughter, was fined 500,000 taka and asked to leave the village; authorities had not issued a formal statement.

In Kuliarchar, Kishoreganj, highway police constable Parvez Mia, 30, died after a rice-husk truck overturned onto his pickup van early on 4 August while the team was responding to a CNG accident.

Parvez, posted at Bhairab Highway Police Station and a resident of Habiganj, was inside the parked pickup when the truck lost control while overtaking a CNG; his body was recovered with help from fire service personnel and local residents.
