Police have arrested a man in Baraigram, Natore, in a case filed by a tiles and sanitaryware trader alleging extortion and other offences.
The arrested man was sent to jail through a court, police said.
In his complaint, the trader said a customer had bought tiles worth Tk19,000 on credit about four months earlier.
He alleged that, after seeking the outstanding payment on 19 July, he was asked to collect it from the customer’s home.
The complaint alleges that several people assaulted him there and made a private video of him without consent.
He further alleged that he was held for about 11 hours and threatened with the video being shared on social media.
The case alleges that Tk500,000 was demanded from him under that threat.
The complainant alleged that Tk26,990 was transferred from his mobile financial-services account and Tk27,000 was withdrawn using his bank card.
He also alleged that Tk60,000 worth of tiles was taken from his business and that he was made to sign a blank stamp paper.
The complaint says he later paid Tk90,000 when further money was demanded.
Police said the trader named six people in the case and that operations to arrest the remaining accused were continuing.
