US President Donald Trump said the United States would begin fresh discussions with Iran on Monday.
He made the announcement while speaking to journalists aboard Air Force One on Sunday.
The stated start time differs, with one account placing it on Monday afternoon and another at noon Washington time.
Trump said the talks followed his decision to pause what he described as a broad military attack.
He said Iran had seen preparations for the planned operation and understood its scale.
In a Truth Social post, Trump said Iran and US allies in the Middle East had requested that military action be held off after an understanding on the scope of a deal.
Trump said Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and intermediaries from the United Arab Emirates and Qatar had urged him not to launch an attack.
He said an agreement on the Strait of Hormuz had been reached and forecast a future agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme.
Trump gave no timetable for completing any agreement and said the United States was prepared to act while adding that he did not want people killed.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said negotiations with Oman on a Strait of Hormuz arrangement were nearing finalization.
Trump did not identify the venue or prospective participants for the planned talks.
Brent crude was cited as falling 4.5 percent to $83.98 a barrel in Asian trading following the announcement.
