Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh on 5 August 2024 as mass demonstrations moved toward Dhaka.
The departure followed weeks of student-led protests that had widened into a broader anti-government movement.
On 6 August 2024, India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar told the Rajya Sabha that Hasina had requested permission to enter India at very short notice.
Jaishankar also said Indian authorities received a request from Bangladeshi authorities to clear the aircraft carrying her.
Sajeeb Wazed, Hasina’s son, said after her departure that she had been considering resignation from the previous day.
He said she left after strong requests from family members and consideration of her safety.
In a later hearing, former International Crimes Tribunal chief prosecutor Tajul Islam gave a different account, saying military leaders had sought to persuade Hasina to resign as crowds approached Ganabhaban.
Tajul Islam said the officials contacted Wazed and told him that resignation was necessary to protect his mother’s life.
That account has not been independently verified within this evidence set.
